St George’s School

DESIGN, WEBSITE BUILD, & LOGO EVOLUTION

St George’s is a non-selective day and boarding school in Harpenden. It was founded in 1907 by Cecil Grant, a pioneer of co-educational boarding, and it remains one of the first non-denominational Christian schools in the country. It has real heritage and a strong sense of community, and it needed a website that did justice to both while still feeling modern.

LAUNCH PROJECT

The Challenge

The old site had grown unwieldy. It had been edited by multiple people over time, and it showed. There was no clear focus and no consistent tone, and the structure had become harder to navigate than it should have been. In the school’s own words, it no longer felt like a true representation of who they were, and it was not as user-friendly as they needed.

For a school that relies on its website to reach parents and prospective families, that matters. A site that feels disjointed quietly works against you, whatever the school behind it is actually like.

Our Approach

We started by getting to know the school properly. We were shown around in person, and we worked closely with Nicola and the senior leadership team to understand the school’s history, its values and what sets it apart. It is the only way to build something that feels like the school rather than a template with a logo dropped in.

Then we rebuilt the site from the ground up. We took it apart into its original content blocks and put it back together with a clearer structure. Redundant pages were removed, others were consolidated, and we brought in a new vertical menu system that makes the site simple to move around. We added features that show the school off properly, including an interactive campus guide and a timeline of its history.

We also handled the visuals. Our photographer spent two days at the school and produced a set of images for the website and the school’s wider marketing. We arranged the videography for the homepage splash reel, so the first thing visitors see is the school itself rather than a stock image.

Alongside the build, we refined the school’s logo. Nothing drastic. We kept the crest and gave the wordmark a tidier, friendlier typeface, so the brand felt a little warmer without losing its heritage.

The result is a site that looks and feels like St George’s, and nowhere else.

The Results

The feedback since launch has been positive across the board, from parents, staff and prospective families. The school tells us the site feels more modern, professional and welcoming, and that it captures the character and values of the school in a way the old one never did.

They really listened to what we wanted and didn’t take a one size fits all approach, creating a website that feels completely authentic to us rather than a generic template. The whole process was smooth and collaborative, and we felt supported throughout.
